History of Kasaragod Municipality

Kasaragod, located at the northernmost part of Kerala, is a region renowned for its rich historical, cultural and geographical heritage. Its strategic location along the Arabian Sea and the presence of the Chandragiri River have played an important role in shaping the history and development of the region.

Historical Background

Kasaragod has been influenced by several ruling dynasties and political powers over the centuries. The region came under the influence of the Kolathiris and later the Vijayanagara Empire. During the period of the Ikkeri Nayakas, several important forts and defensive centres were established in the region. Kasaragod subsequently came under the rule of Tipu Sultan and later under British administration.

Following the formation of the State of Kerala on 1 November 1956, Kasaragod became part of Kerala. At that time, Kasaragod Taluk was part of Kannur District. With the growing administrative and developmental importance of the region, Kasaragod District was formed on 24 May 1984, with Kasaragod town as its headquarters.

Establishment of Kasaragod Municipality

Kasaragod Municipality was established on 15 August 1966. The establishment of the Municipality marked an important milestone in the development of organised urban administration in the region.

Since its formation, the Municipality has progressively expanded its civic functions in response to the growing needs of the urban population. It has played an important role in providing essential civic amenities and promoting planned urban development.
